What Do We Do in Music Class?

Dear Music Students,
In music class, we learn the language of music by singing, playing instruments, and working together. Our classes together are often too short, but if we are focused, you can learn a lot. In younger grades, you will be singing, playing lots of music games, and learning the basics of reading music. In older grades, you will have an opportunity to learn to play a wind instrument called the recorder, you will experience playing percussion, drums, and "Orff instruments" (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels). You will also be developing your ability to read and write music and you will create your own compositions. You may also participate in Carnegie Hall's "Link-Up" program, where you will attend a concert in May and be able to participate by singing and playing your recorder along with the orchestra. Or, you may take a trip to The Jazz Standard, a world class jazz club.
Mostly, I hope you will have fun, but also realize that it takes focus and practice to become a good musician. It's worth it.
Best,
Mr. McGorry

What is the Music Education Philosophy Behind Your Music Class
Our music program combines the KODALY and ORFF approaches to music education. Kodaly and Orff were composers and educators who developed engaging, fun ways for children to learn music. Music is like a language. There are vocabulary terms you will learn. There are symbols musicians use to communicate their ideas The Kodaly and Orff approaches allow you to learn this language and develop these skills through quality music making.

Your Job, My Job
Your job, as a student, is to stay focused, to do your best work, and to never give up. Sometimes learning music can be frustrating because it is a challenge. But, I can help you overcome that and reach your full potential. My job, as your music teacher, is to make our time together productive, engaging, and challenging. Don't ever hesitate to ask me a question (but raise your hand in class or send me an e-mail).
I look forward to working with you.
