Mr. McGorry

"I've always loved music, but I didn't

Mr. McGorry teaches music to Kindergarten through 5th grade at PS 35x in the Bronx, NY.  The music program provides students with an sequential development of music literacy and also focuses on having students performing, creating, and listening to music.  Our instruments include use of the soprano recorder, Djembe drums, percussion instruments, and Orff Instruments (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels).  Singing is also a very important important part of the program.   The concepts of Carl Orff and Zoltan Kodaly are important foundations for the music program.

Mr. McGorry is a dedicated educator and also an active performer.  He frequently performs as a saxophonist (primarily as a jazz player) in the NYC area.  He leads his own group and is also a sideman in other people's groups (for more information, see www.McGorryMusic.com).  His undergraduate studies focused on Jazz Music Performance and Liberal Studies.  In addition, he holds a Master of Arts from New York University (Liberal Studies/Journalism) and a Master of Science (Elementary Education) from Mercy College.  Mr. McGorry has completed Level I of the Orff Schulwerk method of music education at the Eastman School of Music (2006) and Level I (2007) and II (2008) and Level III (2009) of the Kodaly method at the NYU Kodaly Summer Institute.  He is an active member of the following organizations:  American Orff Schulwerk-Association  (NYC Orff Chapter: NYCAOSA) and  Organization of American Kodaly Educators (NYC Chapter: Kodaly Educators of New York).  He is also a member-at-large and the technology coordinator for the Kodaly Organization of New York (KONY).
